Germany’s Dual System of
vocational education and training
Germany’s Dual System of vocational education and training (VET) has been a major factor in Germany’s
economic success and inventiveness over the past six decades.
The holistic approach, its high quality, and first-class reputation have made the Dual System itself an
export success, too.
Countries all over the world model their VET systems on ours. Where the Dual System was born.
The German Dual System of vocational education system has a tradition reaching back to the 12th century.
This holistic approach involves both in-company training and education at vocational schools.
Content and training methods are largely jointly determined by the industry and training colleges to reflect
current vocational practice and ensure a successful mix of theory and practice. Each year, some 60 percent
of German school-leavers choose to enter the Dual System, ensuring that in Germany young people are
integrated into the labour force with a degree of success almost unparalleled in Europe.
Win-win encounters
WorldSkills 2013 will give Competitors, Experts and visitors from WorldSkills member countries and regions

enterprises to major companies, vocational schools and training institutes and trade associations –
are keenly looking forward to opening their doors for this event. They will work hand in hand with the Experts
to prepare and deliver a superb WorldSkills 2013, with instructors and their apprentices playing a key role.
